What is Mole Removal?

Mole removal is the process of completely removing moles from your skin while minimizing scarring and creating a smoother, discrete finish. Using a variety of techniques, Dr. Lao can safely and effectively remove moles from any location.

Who are the Best Candidates for Mole Removal?

The best candidates are anyone who may be unhappy with the appearance of a mole or feeling concerned about any irregular-shaped or colored moles that could be cancerous. Both male and female patients have benefitted from this procedure, giving them a confidence boost.

What types of Moles Does Dr. Lao Remove?

  • Flat moles – Any type of dark spots or irregularity in the skin
  • Raised moles – may possibly run deeper into the dermal layers than flat moles
  • Skin tags – While usually painless, skin tags are small growths that typically have small and narrow stalks that are usually flesh-colored (although some may be darker)

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting mole removal in NYC is to book an appointment with Dr. Lao. During your appointment, Dr. Lao will examine the mole and provide his expert recommendations. If you and Dr. Lao both feel that mole removal is the best solution, he’ll be able to either provide the treatment right there on the spot or book a time for you to come back that you’re more comfortable with.

What to Expect on the Day of Mole Removal

Mole removal in New York is fairly simple. After administering an anesthetic (which takes only a few minutes to numb the area), Dr. Lao will either excise, burn, or freeze the area, depending on the type of mole and removal technique required. You may feel some minimal pressure, but there should be no discomfort due to the anesthetic. After completely removing the mole, Dr. Lao may place several stitches to help with the healing process. The treated area will then be bandaged and you will receive any instructions needed to ensure a full and healthy recovery.

Mole Removal Recovery

The recovery time does vary from patient to patient, but usually, you will be able to pick up your normal routine almost immediately. Some patients who have had a mole removed from a noticeable area tend to take a few days of social downtime while they heal. There may be some mild tenderness in the treated area for the first 1 to 4 days after removal but will subside as you begin to heal. The treated site should be cleaned and covered with a bandage for a few days for optimal results. After this time, the bandage may be removed, but the area should still be cleaned and moisturized. You will most likely need to return in 1 to 2 weeks for a follow-up examination so that Dr. Lao can make sure you are healing properly.

FAQs

How do I know when I should remove a mole?

Although some patients have unsightly moles removed in order to obtain a smoother, even-toned appearance, there are situations in which it could be life-saving. If you are concerned about the possibility of a cancerous mole, it is recommended to follow the “ABCDE” model.

  • Asymmetry - One section of the mole has a different shape, color, or appearance from the rest of the mole.
  • Border - The mole has an irregular border or shape or is not clearly defined from the rest of your skin.
  • Color - May have different colors and/or shades.
  • Diameter - While smaller moles exhibiting some of the other symptoms should be taken seriously, most concerning moles grow to a size of 6mm or larger.
  • Evolving - Any mole that changes over time, whether it be in color, shape, or size.

If you are noticing any of these signs, please contact our office and make an appointment with Dr. Lao.

How long does it take to remove a mole?

The average mole removal procedure takes less than 10 minutes but may last a little longer depending on the operation needed.
