Introduction to Brow Lift
At our practice in NYC, brow lift has become one of our most popular facial plastic surgery procedures. Brow ptosis or droopy brow starts at an early age. If you pay attention and follow the aging pattern of a person, you can often notice his/her brow descend over time relative to the underlying bone. The effect of that results in a “heavy” upper eyelid. In severe cases, a droopy brow not only causes cosmetic concerns but can also partially block your vision, especially in the upper visual field.
Since eyes are in the center of the face, droopy eyebrows affect all nearby structures and cause an overall aged look. The descent of the brow makes the upper lid look heavy and gives a sleepy appearance, and because of the heaviness felt in the upper lid, droopy eyebrow individuals often have to forcefully elevate the brow using their forehead muscle, which further deepens wrinkles on the forehead.
Dr. William Lao is a top plastic surgeon specializing in brow and forehead lift in NYC and strives to deliver the best brow lift results in New York.

BEFORE & AFTERS
F, 61, Asian
F was introduced to my clinic by his wife for evaluation of eyelid and brow rejuvenation. He was constantly bothered by the angry and aged appearance of his eyes. He constantly felt he had to forcefully use his forehead to elevate his brow and he had problems seeing the upper half of his visual field. Notice the difference between his brow and eyelid position before and after surgery. He not only can see better but also looks happier.

J, 67, Caucasian
J came in with a chief complaint of droopy brow and wrinkled forehead. She would like to get rid of the heavy brow appearance with minimal scar. Endoscopic forehead lift was done to lift her brow and also rid of the glabella wrinkles.
*Individual results may vary.
B, 61, Caucasian
B came in with a chief complain of asymmetrical brow. She had suffered injury to the left brow many years ago and it always stayed low in position compared to the right. Surgery was done endoscopically to lift her left eyebrow and fat grafting was done to improve the sunken appearance of her eyes. Notice the improvement in brow asymmetry when she raises her eyebrow and the fuller appearance especially in the right eye socket.
*Individual results may vary.
W, 62, Asian
W came in with concerns for her forehead and glabella wrinkles and the heavy appearance of her brow. After consultation, browlift with forehead lift were done to decrease the wrinkles. Lower blepharoplasty was also done at the same time to improve her eyebag appearance and remove the excess skin.

What is a Brow Lift?
A Brow Lift will remove the drooping or furrowing muscle and tissue in your forehead creating a smoother look and raising the eyebrow to minimize frown lines. Dr. Lao utilizes a conventional surgical method that places an incision just behind your hairline to hide any surgical scars. He may also perform the procedure with the use of an endoscope, which is a viewing instrument that can help the procedure by minimizing the incisions as necessary. Regardless of what technique is best for you, the end results are the same.
Who are the Best Candidates for a Brow Lift?
We always encourage our patients interested in surgery to maintain a healthy lifestyle first and foremost. The best candidates are those who are concerned about forehead wrinkles brought on by the body’s natural aging process, those who may suffer from a genetic predisposition that creates a furrowed brow line or may just have creases created from stressful experiences.
What are the Benefits of a Brow Lift?
A Brow Lift surgery is primarily used in order to regain the youthful look in most of our patients. However, in our experience, we’ve noticed many advantages in getting a Brow Lift, including but not limited to:
- The reduction of moderate to severe forehead frown lines
- A less tired or angry facial expression
- The removal of deep forehead creases and/or wrinkles and furrows that come with age
- Less heavy or “hooded” upper eyelids

How is a Brow Lift Performed?
Just as in upper eyelid procedures, there are many ways of doing a brow lift. All techniques achieve the common goal of lifting the brow but there are variations in terms of the location of the incision, the relative elevation of the lateral brow vs. the medial brow, and whether a combination procedure with the upper eyelid should be performed to enhance the overall look.
Each brow procedure has its pros and cons. The direct incision method is one of the most powerful lifting procedures but it comes with a visible scar on top of the eyebrow. The traditional coronal brow lift procedure is the gold standard procedure but it also carries with it the risk of incision line hair loss and loss of scalp sensation. Endoscopic brow lift procedure uses minimal incisions and can provide adequate lifting of the brow but is considered not as powerful as the direct and coronal brow lifts. The list of procedures goes on and on...
The best brow lift technique is one that is customized for you based on your forehead height, brow position, and the tendency of scarring after a thorough discussion with a plastic surgeon.
Brow Lift Recovery
Following the procedure, Dr. Lao will administer surgical dressing to the treated areas, which should be left on for about 2 days to ensure the best results. We advise that during your recovery time you elevate your head and apply a cold compress as needed to reduce any swelling. We’ve noticed that healthy patients will heal with minimal complications following the surgery, but may feel some soreness.
You may resume a normal routine after 1 or 2 weeks, depending on Dr. Lao’s assessment, but we would highly recommend avoiding any strenuous activity for about a month to ensure the best results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is a brow lift permanent?
Unfortunately, due to our body’s natural aging process and the effects that gravity can have on our skin, a brow lift is not “permanent”. However, the good news is we’ve seen the effects of this procedure last between 10 and 15 years in our patients.
Can I combine a brow lift with eyelid surgery?
Absolutely. While a brow lift may correct any physiological concerns you have, eyelid surgery can be utilized to increase your desired outcome. This can be discussed with Dr. Lao during your consultation for optimal results.
What’s the best age for a brow lift?
While anybody can get a brow lift due to predispositions or stress, our average patient is around 40 - 60 years old.
What are the risks/complications associated with a brow lift?
There is always the possibility of risk or complication when it comes to surgery, but Dr. Lao is adamant about ensuring you the best possible results. Although minimal, due to the nature of the procedure, there is the possibility of delayed healing, mild infection, scarring, or skin irregularities.
G, 63, Nurse, Asian, New York, USA
"I had surgery with Dr.Lao last March 24,2015. My procedure was upper blepharoplasty, brow lift, autologous fat graft to lower lids, chemical peel and neck lift. I had excellent results. I chose him because I saw results from other patients post op. I'm a plastic surgery nurse for years and I can tell you he's a talented doctor, caring and has good bedside manners.
Dr.Lao, thank you for correcting my uneven brows and eyes. I was hesitant at first to have the brow lift because I might get a surprise look but you did it perfectly. It opened up my eyes like the way I look when I was younger. I love my neck, no more chords & extra skin under my chin. The peel improved the texture of my face.
For patients contemplating for any cosmetic procedure you have to go to Dr. Lao.Wherever he practices here in the States or Asia, I highly recommend him."
