Excessive Sweating New York City

Introduction to Excessive Sweating

Axillary shaving is a very effective procedure to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and bromhidrosis (body odor) of the armpit. This procedure addresses both types of sweat glands that are responsible for these embarrassing symptoms in social situations.

What is Axillary Shaving?

Axillary shaving is often offered to patients who have failed conservative and medical treatments for excessive sweating and body malodor from the armpits. Common effective non-surgical treatments are antiperspirants, anticholinergics, and botulinum toxin injections. The effects of these treatments, however, are not long-lasting and require continual usage to prevent symptoms from returning, in addition to their various side effects. Axillary shaving has proven to be an effective, long-lasting, and minimally invasive surgical treatment for this condition.

Dr. William Lao is a top plastic surgeon specializing in axillary shaving in NYC.

Who are the Best Candidates for Axillary Shaving?

The best candidates for Axillary Shaving are anyone tired of consistently removing their body hair via manual shaving.

Dr. Lao has noticed the best results with patients who have darker hair and lighter skin. The laser can focus more on the pigment within the hair and not have the pigment of the skin competing with it. Unfortunately, his patients with blonde or lighter hair are not great candidates.

We do NOT recommend this procedure for you if you currently have any skin rashes, infections, open wounds, or are currently tanning.

What are the Benefits of Axillary Shaving?

  • Body Odor Reduction – Underarm hair can create an unwelcoming odor. While you still might want to apply deodorant, the hair removal can help keep any stench more maintainable.

  • Increased Confidence – While underarm hair is completely natural, some of our patients prefer a clean appearance. Regular shaving can leave a stubble that many patients feel is unattractive. Axillary shaving can take away any of the embarrassment some of our patients may feel.

  • No More Ingrown hairs – Ingrown hairs are usually painful, swollen, and visible. This procedure not only saves you time in your daily/weekly preparation but also prevents ingrown hair.

  • Sweat Less – Your body hair will trap sweat underneath your armpits, which often leads to unsightly clothing stains. When you remove your body hair, the staining problem is lessened and the probability of excessive sweating is lessened.

What to Expect on the Day of Axillary Shaving?

The procedure is often done for different reasons. In Asia, axillary shaving is mainly targeting the apocrine sweat glands that are responsible for the malodorous smell; whereas in America, this procedure is almost always done for excessive sweating, which targets the eccrine sweat glands. Surgery involves a small one-centimeter incision in a natural crease of the armpit, a revolving shaver then is used to shave off the sweat glands under the skin in the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Procedure time is short and almost painless.
