有別於正常外突的乳頭，患者乳頭會下拉及凹陷。特別是對於年輕女性而言，乳頭凹陷可能成為尷尬的根源。
乳頭凹陷的確切原因未知，但大部分都是天生使然。患者往往是一出生便有了這種問題。少數有這種問題的人是由於手術的間接影響或胸部的創傷造成疤痕組織將乳頭往下拉。大部分因這種問題而來求診的病患都說他們在親密時感到不自在及尷尬。
許多方法可矯正乳頭凹陷的問題。但大原則是必須在乳頭周圍做個小切口並突破束縛住乳頭的疤痕組織。術後的結果通常令人滿意，且該手術只須局部麻醉並在短時間內完成。
