Breast Asymmetry New York City

Introduction

Women who are not happy with the proportions of their breasts are suitable candidates for breast asymmetry procedures. Dr. Lao will perform an initial assessment, discuss your aesthetic goals, and go over your medical history.

At our esteem practice in NYC, breast asymmetry correction is frequently requested. Breast asymmetry is a condition that occurs where one breast has a different size, volume, or position from the other. It’s a common occurrence in most women and may be caused by hormonal changes, puberty, or trauma. Extreme fluctuations in weight along with pregnancy can also contribute to different breast sizes and shapes.

While there is usually no cause for concern with breast asymmetry, larger variations in size can make it difficult for a woman to wear certain styles of clothing and bras. In cases where a sudden change in breast density occurs, they will be analyzed for indications of cancer. Dr. Lao will develop a treatment plan depending on the type of breast asymmetry experienced.

Dr. William Lao is a top plastic surgeon specializing in breast asymmetry surgery in NYC.

What is Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Breast asymmetry can be addressed with breast augmentation, a breast lift, or a combination of both. Dr. Lao will assess your breast contours to determine the proper course of action. In cases where one breast sags lower than the other, a breast lift can be performed to bring them more in line with one another. This process involves the removal of excess skin and underlying tissue to make the necessary corrections.

Women who experience more extreme differences in size may find that a breast augmentation is a suitable option. This procedure requires the placement of breast implants to increase their size. Combining both techniques can provide a comprehensive improvement in the breast contours.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Asymmetry Correction

There are several different procedures that Dr. Lao uses to correct asymmetrical breasts, and depending on the plan that is discussed will determine what will happen the day you come in.

Breast Implants – Performed under general anesthesia, Dr. Lao will make a single incision in a discreet location, separate your breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue of your chest, and insert the implant. He will then suture up the incision and bandage it up. The operation can take a few hours with an additional couple of hours in recovery.

Breast Lift – Done with sedation and local anesthesia, Dr. Lao will make a small discreet incision which he will use to remove excess breast skin and reposition your nipples to a higher position. He will then bring in your breast skin and close the incision. This procedure usually takes between 2 and 3 hours.

Breast Reduction – Using general anesthesia, Dr. Lao makes an incision around your areola and down each breast. He will then remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of each breast. Then he will reshape the breast and reposition the nipple and areola. He will then close up the incision and apply a compression bandage.

Breast Asymmetry Correction Recovery

You will be able to return home the same day following your breast asymmetry correction, however, you should arrange for someone to drive you home. Dr. Lao will probably install some semi-discreet drainage tubes to assist in the reduction of blood or fluid build-up as you heal. He will also wrap you with a compression garment to reduce swelling and help your breasts maintain their proper shape as they heal.

You will need a few weeks to recover and should have a friend or family member be available to assist you during this time since you will be unable to lift anything or do your typical home chores during this period.

After a few weeks, you should be able to do minor tasks and slowly return to an exercise routine. It will take several months for your breasts to fully heal, after which they will settle into their final, symmetrical shape and position that you will love.
