Upper Eyelid Surgery New York City

Introduction to Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper Eyelid Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty) is the most common cosmetic procedure in Asia for the young and cross-culture in older individuals.

At our world-class practice in NYC, upper eyelid surgery is one of Dr. Lao’s most popular procedures. Also known as upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the surgical procedure is created to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes and correct severe eyelid sagging. Over time, the upper eyelids can begin to droop. This can make a person appear tired or bored and can make them look older than their actual age. In cases of severe ptosis, the issue may reach the point where a portion of the vision is obscured, which can decrease one’s quality of life.

NYC double-board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. William Lao can utilize his immense technical precision and a sharp eye for facial aesthetics to deliver results that look amazingly natural and beautiful. Dr. Lao has performed numerous upper eyelid blepharoplasty procedures at our New York office and can provide you with outstanding care and results.

What is Upper Eyelid Surgery?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most common procedures in cosmetic surgery both in the West and the East. The population of people who desire upper blepharoplasty varies in a wide range of ages, including younger individuals who are trying to combat premature aging and older patients who want to look as young as they feel. For older individuals, the eye often is the tell-tale sign of aging. Combining forehead and brow sagging and skin loosening, excess skin develops hooding over the eyelid margin and in a severe case can block the superior vision. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty reverses the aged look by removing the excess skin and herniated fat and can improve the visual field.

What to Expect on the Day of Upper Eyelid Surgery

Many techniques are available. The two main categories are incisional and non-incisional blepharoplasty. The non-incisional procedure is more appropriate for younger individuals who do not have much excess skin and fat; whereas incisional blepharoplasty is often required for older patients with excess skin. The final decision should be individualized after discussion with a plastic surgeon.

Asian Double Eyelid

In younger individuals, especially in the Asian population, the double fold on the upper eyelid is considered a sign of beauty. However, depending on the genetics and the country of origin, this double-fold only occurs naturally in less than 50% of the population. A majority of the time, the eyelid crease forms very close to the eyelash line, giving the appearance of a single smooth eyelid. To achieve this desired look, upper eyelid blepharoplasty is required to create the double fold by surgically crafting a crease higher up on the eyelid.

The goal of the procedure is to create a natural-looking double eyelid while retaining the patient’s natural cultural characteristics and features. There are many Asian men and women who have natural double eyelids. Surgery is performed to give the eyelids a similar appearance, not to “westernize” their natural appearance.

Also in the Asian population, congenital ptosis of the upper eyelid is common and blepharoplasty can create the double fold and correct the droopy eyelid at the same time for enhanced results.

Eyelid Ptosis Correction

Eyelid ptosis refers to the sagging of the skin of the eyelids. Ptosis can occur in a single eyelid or both. Many people often experience age-related ptosis as they get older. Ptosis can also occur as a result of muscle disease, nerve issues, or congenital issues. The severity of ptosis can range from not interfering with your vision to partially covering vision to completely covering the entire eye.

In these instances, upper-eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed on one or both of the eyelids to restore lost vision and improve the overall appearance of the eyelids and eyes. Dr. Lao can thoroughly examine the extent of the issue to determine if upper eyelid blepharoplasty is the ideal option.

Some swelling and bruising will occur after surgery, but these issues are to be expected and will dissipate over the coming weeks. Any residual bruising can be covered by makeup. You should be able to watch TV and read after a few days. Most people take around one week off of work to allow time for a majority of the bruising and swelling to go down. More strenuous activities should be avoided for around two weeks.

How long until I see results?

You’ll be able to see the results immediately. However, your eyelids will be a bit swollen, so the best results are seen after a few weeks.

Can I combine Upper Eyelid Surgery with other procedures?

Many of our patients combine upper eyelid surgery with lower blepharoplasty (lower eyelid surgery) for a rejuvenated appearance on the whole eye area. You can also combine the surgery with a facelift or a non-surgical treatment such as BOTOX or dermal fillers.
