Breast Lift New York City

Introduction to Breast Lift

Breast lift, also known as Mastopexy in plastic surgery, is a procedure that repositions the nipple and elevates the breast tissue. The severity of breast drop, medically referred to as breast ptosis, is judged by the relative position of the nipple to the inferior breast fold (inframammary fold). Assessing breast ptosis is important in determining the most suitable surgical approach.

At our NYC practice, breast lift surgery is a very popular procedure. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy in plastic surgery, is a procedure that repositions the nipple and elevates the breast tissue. The severity of breast drop, or breast ptosis, is judged by the relative position of the nipple to the inferior breast fold (inframammary fold). As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. William Lao is renowned among his patients for offering the best breast lift that New York City has to offer, helping to enhance the appearance of a woman’s breasts.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is usually only needed for ladies after their late 30s. However, occasionally, severe breast droop can develop in younger girls.

The most common cause is breastfeeding. During breastfeeding, the engorged milk glands cause the breast skin to stretch. Once breastfeeding is complete, the breast glands return to their original state. However, the stretched skin has already lost its elasticity, making it difficult for the skin to spring back to its original form. This results in sagging breasts with nipples that point downward.

It’s a less likely situation in younger girls because their skin quality is generally better, and their skin often contracts more effectively when breastfeeding is done.

Other causes of breast droop include significant weight loss, aging, and genetics. Additionally, conditions like tuberous breasts can contribute to abnormal breast shape and may require specialized treatment, such as implants, to correct both shape and breast volume.

Breast lift procedures utilize various plastic surgery techniques and rely on the knowledge of the blood supply to the nipple to elevate the breast tissue and reposition the nipple by removing excess skin, thereby minimizing the visibility of scars in the least conspicuous areas.

Ladies often seek a simple Breast Lift when they do not want any implants/foreign bodies in their breast, yet desire a fuller and younger look for themselves.

What are the Benefits of a Breast Lift

Many of our patients who opt for a Breast Lift have found that their breasts appear perkier, more symmetrical, and feel firmer. A breast lift is designed to restore a youthful contour and shape to the breasts, reversing the effects of aging, gravity, and other factors that cause sagging. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, many recipients experience a boost in their confidence following the procedure.

Who are the Best Candidates for a Breast Lift?

You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if you:

  • Have saggy breasts that have lost their shape and volume

  • Have areolas and nipples that point downward

  • Do not smoke

  • Are at a stable, healthy weight

  • Have breasts that are tube-like or elongated

  • Have uneven breasts (one breast is larger and/or a different shape than the other)

  • Are done breastfeeding and/or having children

Some candidates may also consider breast implants in combination with a breast lift to enhance both lift and volume.

What’s the First Step?

Before this procedure can be performed on you, you will need to have a consultation with Dr. Lao. During your consultation, Dr. Lao will go over your medical history with you and ask you about any previous surgeries or treatments you have had in the past.

He will also ask you about the medications you take, including NSAIDs. You should stop taking NSAIDs, like aspirin and ibuprofen, before your breast lift. These medications may increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery.

Dr. Lao takes time to understand the goals and concerns of patients seeking a breast lift, ensuring he addresses their expectations and motivations. During your consultation, Dr. Lao will examine your breasts and determine the right technique and treatment plan for your specific needs and desired outcome.

Before your breast lift, you should make arrangements for someone to transport you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself home once you are out of surgery.

If you have any questions or concerns about this procedure, please ask Dr. Lao during your consultation, and he will be happy to address any concerns you may have.

Types of Breast Lifts

There are several different techniques for a Breast Lift, and each one serves its purpose; however, the variety allows everyone the opportunity to achieve the aesthetic appearance they desire. A key step in all breast lift procedures is trimming excess skin, which helps reshape and rejuvenate the breasts, resulting in an uplifted and youthful appearance.

  • Augmentation Mastopexy

Augmentation Mastopexy is a combination procedure that involves both a breast lift (mastopexy) and breast augmentation with implants. It’s designed for patients who want to correct sagging breasts and enhance their breast size, shape, and projection in a single surgery.

This procedure is especially popular among women who have experienced changes in breast appearance due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or aging. Over time, the skin loses elasticity, causing the breasts to sag (ptosis) and appear deflated. While a standard breast lift can restore perkiness by repositioning the breast tissue and nipple, it does not add volume to the breasts. That’s where implants come in—providing fullness and contour, particularly in the upper pole of the breast.

  • Lollipop and Benelli Lift Techniques

When it comes to breast lift surgery, two of the most commonly used techniques are the lollipop lift and the Benelli lift. The lollipop lift, also known as the vertical incision or vertical lift, involves making an incision around the areola and then a straight vertical incision down to the breast crease. This breast lift technique is ideal for women who need a moderate amount of lift, typically more than 1-2 centimeters, while still minimizing scarring compared to more extensive procedures. The lollipop lift allows the plastic surgeon to reshape the underlying breast tissue and remove excess skin, resulting in a firmer, more youthful breast contour.

On the other hand, the Benelli lift, sometimes referred to as a periareolar or “donut” lift, utilizes a single incision around the areola. This approach is best suited for patients who require only a minor lift, usually about 1 centimeter. While the Benelli lift can effectively reposition the nipple and tighten the breast, it may sometimes result in pleating or folds around the areola as the skin heals. Each breast lift procedure has its own advantages and limitations, and the choice between a lollipop or Benelli lift depends on your unique anatomy, the degree of breast sagging, and your desired outcome. During your breast lift consultation, your plastic surgeon will recommend the best breast lift procedure to achieve your goals.

  • Anchor Breast Lift Scar

The anchor breast lift, also known as the Wise-pattern or inverted-T lift, is a breast lift technique designed for women with significant sagging or excess skin. This method involves three incisions: one around the areola, a vertical incision from the areola down to the breast crease, and a horizontal incision along the breast crease itself. The resulting anchor breast lift scar is more extensive than those from other techniques; however, it allows the surgeon to remove a greater amount of excess skin and reshape the entire breast, resulting in a dramatic improvement in breast contour and nipple position.

While the anchor breast lift scar may be more noticeable initially, proper scar care and following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions can help minimize its appearance over time. Most patients find that, as the scar fades, the benefits of a more youthful breast shape and improved breast position far outweigh the initial visibility of the scar. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with detailed guidance on how to care for your incision, ensuring optimal healing and helping your breast lift results look as natural and beautiful as possible.

  • Scarless Breast Lift

A new and unique take on the breast lift, a scarless breast lift brings your breasts into a more youthful position without the need for invasive surgery, utilizing BodyTite technology. Using bipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy and liposuction, this non-scar breast lift can help firm loose skin, add shape, and contour the appearance of your breasts.

Dr. Lao will place a small electrode on the surface of your skin and, through a very small incision (1-2 mm) underneath, will insert a tiny cannula. These two devices will work together to deliver the concentrated RF energy directly to the underlying tissue. Carefully guiding the cannula along the treatment area, Dr. Lao will be able to liquefy the excess fat cells and lift the breast. Meanwhile, the RF energy simultaneously tightens the initial skin layer and stimulates collagen production in the subdermis, resulting in a firming effect.

This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and will take about one to three hours, but it will vary depending on your specific goals. You should be able to enjoy the final results for several years.

Fixing Uneven Breasts with a Breast Lift

Many women experience uneven breasts, whether due to genetics, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuations. Breast lift surgery offers an effective solution for correcting uneven breasts and achieving a more balanced, symmetrical appearance. During the breast lift procedure, your plastic surgeon can address differences in breast size and shape by removing excess skin from the larger breast, tightening the surrounding tissue, and, if needed, using fat grafting to add volume to the smaller breast. In some cases, both breasts may require lifting to create a harmonious breast contour.

The goal of breast lift surgery for uneven breasts is to create natural-looking symmetry while enhancing the overall shape and position of the breasts. The nipple and areola can also be repositioned to align with each other, further enhancing the aesthetic result. By carefully tailoring the surgical approach to your unique anatomy, your breast lift surgeon can help you achieve a more confident, balanced look.

How Do I Prepare for My Breast Lift?

Proper preparation is essential for a safe and successful breast lift. In the weeks leading up to your procedure, Dr. Lao will provide you with detailed pre-operative instructions tailored to your unique situation. Some general steps you may be asked to follow include:

  • Medical Evaluation: You may need to undergo lab testing or a medical evaluation to ensure you’re healthy enough for surgery.
  • Adjusting Medications: Inform Dr. Lao of all medications and supplements you’re currently taking. You may be asked to adjust or stop certain medications, such as blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen, as they increase bleeding risk.
  • Quit Smoking: Smoking interferes with healing and increases the risk of complications. If you smoke, you will need to stop several weeks before surgery.
  • Plan for Recovery: Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to assist you for at least the first 24 hours. It’s important to have a support system in place.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours before surgery, as it may interfere with anesthesia and recovery.
  • Fasting: You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery, especially if general anesthesia will be used.

Breast lift surgeries are typically performed as outpatient procedures, allowing patients to return home the same day without the need for an overnight hospital stay.

Following these steps can help you feel more confident going into surgery and help ensure a smoother recovery process.

What to Expect on the Day of a Breast Lift

There are several techniques for performing a breast lift. Of course, implants alone can provide some lifting effect, but many people who desire a breast lift do not want any foreign body inside their bodies.

Achieves the lifting effect without an implant, excess skin must be trimmed in various patterns, and the breast tissue often needs to be rearranged to provide a long-lasting result. Almost all techniques of breast lift involve a scar around the areola, but this is often very well hidden.

The more severe the breast drop is, however, the longer incisions are needed to correct the drop. The nipple and the enlarged areola can also be reduced to the ideal size at the same time, depending on the individual’s request.

Many patients feel well enough to resume light activities within a few days after their breast lift.

Breast Lift Recovery

After your breast lift, bandages will be placed over your breasts, and you will likely be given a surgical support bra to wear. You may experience bruising and swelling for one to two weeks, and may be given medication to help ease any discomfort or pain after your procedure.

You should not perform any strenuous activities or do any lifting, bending, or straining for at least two weeks after your breast lift. Ask Dr. Lao when it is okay for you to resume your normal daily activities.

Be sure to follow all recovery and aftercare instructions provided to you by Dr. L. If you have any questions about what to do after your breast lift, please ask him during your consultation.

7 Tips for Recovery

Recovery from a breast lift can be smooth and manageable with the right preparation and care. Here are seven practical tips to help you heal faster and more comfortably:

  • 3. Avoid Strenuous Activity: Wait at least four to six weeks before engaging in strenuous activity, such as heavy lifting or intense physical exercise. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
  • 4. Manage Pain Effectively: Use prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter options (as advised) to stay comfortable during the first few days.
  • 5. Follow Scar Care Instructions: Dr. Lao may recommend silicone sheets or specific ointments to minimize scarring.

FAQs

Will a Breast Lift Surgery Increase the Size of My Breasts?

A breast lift can alter the size of your breasts by one full cup; however, it’s not exactly “increasing your size”. Studies have shown that this procedure restores your breasts to their accurate size and provides better comfort for the recipient.

Should I Get a Breast Lift if I Have Larger Breasts?

If you are looking into a Breast Reduction, then a Breast Lift pairs perfectly with that procedure. If you would like to keep the size of your original breasts but would like to make them perkier, please discuss your aesthetic preferences with Dr. Lao. Gravity is a major factor in drooping breasts, and heavier breasts are typically more affected.

Can I Combine My Breast Lift with Implants?

Of course! Many of our NYC Breast Lift patients will combine their surgery with a Breast Implant to increase their cup size. This combination of procedures is especially popular amongst our patients who have had children because the amalgamation of surgeries also addresses drooping and deflation that typically occurs from breastfeeding.

Will Losing Weight Alter My Breast Lift Results?

If you have minor fluctuations in weight gain or weight loss, your Breast Lift results shouldn’t be affected too much. That being said, if you experience substantial weight loss (or gain), it can affect the elasticity of your breast skin, which may contribute to saggy breasts. While weight changes are completely normal, Dr. Lao recommends leaning towards whichever direction you want to go and doing so gradually to avoid drastic changes.

What Determines Incision Type?

Your Breast Lift incision will be based on the degree of deflation, the elasticity of your skin, your breast and nipple placement, and whether your procedure will be performed simultaneously with Breast Augmentation. The most common types of incisions are Circumareolar, Lollipop, or Inverted T. Dr. Lao will discuss the pros and cons of each type with you during your consultation, as well as which one would work best to achieve your goals.

Will There Be Scars?

Unfortunately, whenever there are dramatic cuts in the body, the natural response is the formation of scar tissue. Thankfully, Dr. Lao is incredibly deliberate in where he makes his incisions, so they are a little bit more discreet. As your incisions heal after surgery, the scars will appear as raised, red lines. Every patient heals in their own unique way, and while scars will always be somewhat present, you will be provided with directions to help lessen their appearance, and they will also fade and flatten naturally over time.

How Long Until I Can Work Out After My Breast Lift?

While you should only return to a light workout after Dr. Lao says you can, it’s usually about six weeks or more before most patients are able to get back into their standard workout routine. Light walking is permitted before the timeframe, but if you have any concerns or questions regarding your workout, please feel free to discuss it with Dr. Lao during your consultation.

Is a Breast Lift Painful?

Thanks to the use of anesthesia during your procedure, there should be minimal to zero pain. You may, however, experience some soreness or mild pain following your procedure, but these can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or by applying cold compresses.

How Long Until I See Results?

You will likely see results immediately after your breast lift; however, your breasts will continue to change and settle over the next few months.

Can I Combine a Breast Lift with Other Procedures?

Absolutely! Many of our patients combine their breast lift with a mommy makeover or tummy tuck to achieve the body they desire. If you are interested in combining your breast lift with another procedure, please discuss this with Dr. Lao during your consultation.

What Are the Risks Associated with a Breast Lift?

Any surgery, unfortunately, comes with potential risks. Some of the risks associated with Breast Lift Surgery are:

  • Bleeding or Hematoma formation
  • Breast Asymmetry
  • Breast Contour or Irregular Shapes
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (cardiac and pulmonary complications)
  • Fat Necrosis (fatty tissue found deep in the skin that may die)
  • Fluid Accumulation
  • Infection
  • Loss of Nipple and Areola (can be partial or total)
  • Negative reactions to the Anesthesia
  • Nipple or Breast Sensation change (can be temporary or permanent)
  • Poor healing
  • Possible Revisional Surgery
