What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation creates a stronger facial appearance using a safe, pliable material that can range in size and shape. The implant is made from a smooth and flexible material such as silicone or Gortex (PTFE) to give you a natural, powerful appearance.

Who are the Best Candidates for Chin Augmentation?

A great candidate for a chin implant is anyone who would like to have a stronger jawline and prominent profile. We suggest anyone interested be in overall good health and maintain realistic expectations of the procedure. If you are experiencing any current illnesses or have any open wounds, we do suggest that you allow yourself to heal before attempting to get this procedure done.

What are the Benefits of Chin Augmentation?

There are many benefits when it comes to receiving chin implants in NYC, which can include but are not limited to:

  • Permanent results
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improved side profile
  • Gives you a stronger jaw appearance
  • Balances out a prominent nose

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting chin implants or chin augmentation in NYC with Dr. William Lao is to book a consultation. During your initial visit, you’ll be able to explain to Dr. Lao what aesthetic changes you’d like to see in your chin. Dr. Lao will provide a thorough assessment of your face and give you his expert recommendations. We’ll want to make sure you’re very comfortable with our medical opinions. If you and Dr. Lao both feel that this is the best procedure for you, surgery will be booked and we’ll provide you with pre and postoperative instructions. It’s vital that you follow these instructions as closely as possible as they are designed to ensure we can provide the best chin augmentation results with the least amount of risk.

What to Expect on the Day of Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation can be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Dr. Lao might administer some local numbing injection before beginning your procedure to ensure maximum comfort. Once the anesthesia begins to take effect (about 15 minutes), Dr. Lao will create a tiny incision either in your mouth where your gum line and lower lip meet (this leaves no visible scarring) or in the natural crease line under the chin (leaves a minor scar but will fade over time). He will then stretch the tissue ever so gently to create a space so he can insert the chin implant. Once he attaches the implant securely to your existing jawbone, he will use very fine sutures to close the incision and apply some dressing to keep the freshly sewn skin as clean and sanitary as possible.

Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation (Chin Fillers)

Quickly becoming a very popular alternative to Implants, chin fillers optimize the chin by creating definition in the lower third of your face. When combining the injection with your natural cheeks and jawline, it can create a “heart-shaped” face. The filler is injected into the anterior part of your chin which also helps support the jowls and prevent an angry down-turning of the lip muscles.

Chin Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is a reliable and inexpensive alternative to chin augmentation. By using the fat from a donor area elsewhere on your body, such as your stomach, it is then injected into your chin giving it a fuller look.

Chin Augmentation Recovery

You will be able to return to your home after your surgery, but we would recommend taking the next few days off in order to comfortably recover. You will be required to wear the bandages that were applied for the next 2 to 3 days to ensure a healthy recovery. You might also feel some soreness around your jaw due to the operation, but you will be prescribed some pain medication by Dr. Lao to alleviate any pain or discomfort your may experience. You will also need to adjust your diet to consuming liquids and soft foods for a few days after your procedure because chewing will probably be limited. A majority of patients who receive a chin implant also experience a tightened and/or stretched sensation, but these feelings should disappear after a few days. You should also avoid any sort of excessive activity for the first few weeks, although some patients can fully recover around ten days after the surgery. A follow-up appointment with Dr. Lao will be required so he may assess the result and your progress. You will begin to notice the full effects of the chin implant after about six weeks when the swelling dissipates. If you notice any excessive bleeding, swelling, fever, or any other symptoms, please contact our office immediately.
