What to Expect on the Day of Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation can be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Dr. Lao might administer some local numbing injection before beginning your procedure to ensure maximum comfort. Once the anesthesia begins to take effect (about 15 minutes), Dr. Lao will create a tiny incision either in your mouth where your gum line and lower lip meet (this leaves no visible scarring) or in the natural crease line under the chin (leaves a minor scar but will fade over time). He will then stretch the tissue ever so gently to create a space so he can insert the chin implant. Once he attaches the implant securely to your existing jawbone, he will use very fine sutures to close the incision and apply some dressing to keep the freshly sewn skin as clean and sanitary as possible.

You will be able to return to your home after your surgery, but we would recommend taking the next few days off in order to comfortably recover. You will be required to wear the bandages that were applied for the next 2 to 3 days to ensure a healthy recovery. You might also feel some soreness around your jaw due to the operation, but you will be prescribed some pain medication by Dr. Lao to alleviate any pain or discomfort your may experience. You will also need to adjust your diet to consuming liquids and soft foods for a few days after your procedure because chewing will probably be limited. A majority of patients who receive a chin implant also experience a tightened and/or stretched sensation, but these feelings should disappear after a few days. You should also avoid any sort of excessive activity for the first few weeks, although some patients can fully recover around ten days after the surgery. A follow-up appointment with Dr. Lao will be required so he may assess the result and your progress. You will begin to notice the full effects of the chin implant after about six weeks when the swelling dissipates.
