What is IPL Photofacial?

Also referred to as Photofacial, IPL Treatment helps improve your skin’s color and texture without having surgery. Utilizing pulsating light energy to target a certain color in your skin, an IPL device sends out multiple wavelengths of light that can treat a range of skin conditions such as:

  • Red, brown, or splotchy skin due to a health condition
  • Visible damage caused by sun exposure – also called Photoaging
  • Acne
  • Birthmarks
  • Stretchmarks
  • Fine Wrinkles
  • FrecklesSpider Veins
  • Unwanted Hair
  • And many more!

After receiving your IPL treatment, you may notice a more youthful appearance because you will have a more even skin tone.

Who are the Best Candidates for IPL Photofacial?

The best candidates are those with lighter brown or pale skin. Please confer with Dr. Lao if you are pregnant, have a skin condition, or are taking medications for other conditions.

We do not recommend this procedure if you are very dark-skinned, are sensitive to light, might have skin cancer, use a retinoid cream, have severe scarring or any keloid scar tissue, have a skin resurfacing disorder, or have recently tanned your skin via sunlight, tanning beds, or tanning creams.

What are the Benefits of IPL Photofacial?

The IPL Photofacial treatment is non-invasive and non-ablative, meaning there is no tissue removal and can fix several types of unwanted skin problems. This procedure can allow you to get rid of vascular lesions, freckles or age marks, facial lines, and wrinkles, remove unwanted dark hair, and even rejuvenate aged skin, although this does require a series of IPL treatments.

Before your IPL treatment in Manhattan, Dr. Lao will explain the process and clearly define your expectations from the treatment, and tell you whether or not the results you are looking for are achievable with this method.

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting an IPL Photofacial in NYC is to book a consultation with Dr. William Lao at his New York City office. During your appointment, Dr. Lao will further explain the treatment, answer questions, and provide his expert skin recommendations.

What to Expect on the Day of IPL Photofacial

The day of your treatment is normally very quick and simple. You will be provided with protective eyewear to avoid damage to your retinas, and a topical gel may be applied to aid with any pain or discomfort from the laser. After a cold gel is applied to the area being treated, the smooth, glass surface of the IPL treatment head is applied to your skin, delivering a precise pulse of light to the treated area. Most procedures last around 20 minutes, and you will be able to return to work immediately. We highly recommend avoiding the use of perfume, makeup, and/or other scented products that might irritate your skin.

IPL Photofacial Recovery

After your treatment, you will experience your skin turning pink and little soreness immediately following the procedure. In the next few days, you may feel the sensation of a mild sunburn, such as redness, peeling, and swelling.

We suggest avoiding too much sun exposure in the following days and weeks after your treatment and utilizing sunscreen over the treated area to achieve the best results. There is the rare possibility that your skin pigment may absorb too much light energy, in which blistering could occur. There is also a very minimal chance that your pigment cells can be damaged leaving darker or paler patches of skin, or possible scarring, but this too is very rare.
