What to Expect on the Day of Laser Acne Treatment Using AviClear

When you come into our office for your appointment, your skin will first be cleansed off for a safe and unobstructed treatment. Dr. Lao will then apply the laser directly to the acne-affected areas, during which time you may feel a slight warming sensation as the laser works to target the oil glands.

There is no numbing (i.e. anesthetic) required as the laser is equipped with a special skin cooling technology to minimize discomfort, however, we can offer it if you’re extremely sensitive to the procedure.

Each treatment will take about 30 minutes to perform.

After your treatment, you can return to your normal routine, but you should do your best to avoid unprotected sunlight, as your skin will be sensitive to UV rays. You can expect some mild symptoms such as inflammation and redness to occur, but they should fade within a few minutes. Your acne may also flare up for a few days after treatment. You may continue to use any prescription acne medications simultaneously.

You can expect to see a reduction in acne breakouts as well as an improvement in the overall appearance of your skin after your first session, but for best results, we recommend a series of three treatments with your optimal results being seen after the completion of the full series. Is AviClear painful?

Thanks to the contact cooling aspect of the treatment, most patients do not find the treatments to be painful. There have been reports of patients feeling a “snapping” sensation, but it’s typically very subtle. While patients with larger pimples that go deeper into their dermis may feel a bit more discomfort than those with more mild cases of acne, many of our patients do not require any pain mitigation during their treatments. If you are concerned about pain from the treatment, please inform Dr. Lao during your consultation so that he can discuss the different options to alleviate your experience.

How many appointments will I need?

Every patient has different needs based on their skin, but on average, you can expect about three treatment sessions spaced about a month apart. Please keep in mind that patients with more severe acne will probably require a few additional treatments. Dr. Lao will give you a better idea of how many he thinks you will need and will always let you know when he would like for you to return.

How long until I see results?

It’s been reported that roughly 87% of patients who receive AviClear are satisfied and able to see a noticeable difference after only one session!
